Bowen Therapy, also known as the Bowen Technique, uses a series of precise moves made with the fingers and thumbs which prompt the body to reset, re-balance, and promote healthy function. Many of the moves are made over particularly stress loaded areas e.g. the lower back. Every few moves the therapist leaves the room for a couple of minutes to allow the client's brain and body to respond to what has just happened, and to start getting down to work on the problems. The work feels very light but the results are often very profound. Some of the moves trigger the part of the central nervous system responsible for rest, digestion, and repair. So, a Bowen treatment can be very, very relaxing.
Bowen therapists work with, and through, the fascia. Fascia is a soft tissue which forms the layer between the skin and muscles and also gives muscles a structure - without it they would just be pink goo! Until recently it was little studied or understood. We are also working with the communication network that is the nervous system. Bowen can be thought of as a conversation between the therapist's hands and the client's nervous system.
The Bowen Technique can be performed on clients wearing light clothing, as well as directly onto skin. It is suitable for all, from the beginning to the end of life. Pregnant women can enjoy a Bowen treatment.
Three treatments at weekly intervals are a good starting point and would typically bring some significant improvements. Maintenance treatments are then a good investment for continued wellbeing in the long run. More complex presentations may also need a longer term plan.
Mixing Bowen with other hands-on therapies leads to an unproductive 'overload'. I will ask you not to have any other physical therapies for one week after each Bowen treatment eg massage, chiropractic, osteopathy, reiki, lasers, heat/ice. Please continue taking prescribed medicines.
